NOURISH Food Store
The NOURISH Food Store bridges the gap between a discount supermarket and a food bank.
Based within the Cedarwood Centre, our store offers basic food and none food products which are kindly donated. We offer a small range of range produce too! Our main supported is Tin On A Wall North Tyneside CIC who donate to the store every first Saturday of the month. We also get surplus donations which are too good to throw away from Greggs, Aldi and Lidl. You just pick up a basket and shop with dignity as you choose the shopping you need to supplement your weekly shop.
Who can shop here?
Our store is available to all, no criteria to fulfil. Whether you’re in work or out of work, our aim is to provide a supplemented shopping experience to anyone, no questions asked.
How do I join?
Call into the Cedarwood Centre and complete a short membership form. Don't worry if you can not fill in the form on your own, there will be a member of the team who will be more than happy to help you. Please bring proof of your address as we can only accept one membership per household.
How much does it cost?
Membership is £1 and a standard shop is £6. Depending on what you choose to buy, goods you pick up for £6, can value in excess of £16. Your membership fee is a one off fee as long as your membership is used at least once every 13 weeks. If your membership is not used within this time, it will cost £1 reactivate.
How does it work?
For your £6, you can choose at least 12 items from the store based on a colour system which we will explain, there is only 2 colours so quite simple.
How often can I shop?
You can use the store once a week.
When is the store open?
We are open Tuesday and Wednesday, 11am to 1pm and we operate with a dedicated team of volunteers which is led by Jo Scorer, our Nourish Food Lead.
Where does the food come from?
All of our stock is donated hence why our stock variety can differ week on week. Tin On A Wall North Tyneside CIC is our biggest supporter, donating over half a ton every first Saturday of the month. Other sources include, Lidl, Morrisons, Greggs in addition to local businesses, individuals, clubs and schools.
We help tackle the environmental impact of the food industry by working with a number of local supermarkets to reduce surplus food waste. Each year we recycle over 10 tonnes of food waste that would normally end up in the waste chain.
Can I donate food to the store?
Absolutely, if you are able support the store in any way, please do get in touch. From a few tins or packets, to an organised collection within a school, shop or business, anything would be appreciated. We have donations bins too, should you be able to host a collection point.
